An effective strategy for preparing transparent ceramics using nanorod powders based on pressure-assisted particle fracture and rearrangement

Abstract Achieving full densification of some ceramic materials, such as Y 2 O 3 , without sintering aids by spark plasma (SPS) is a great challenge when plastic deformation contributes limitedly to the yield stress material at an elevated temperature higher than applied pressure. Herein, we demonstrate that particle fracture and rearrangement effective strategy promote during pressure-assisted process. Specifically, nanocrystalline powders composed nanorod near-spherical particles were synthesized sintered various temperatures SPS. The results show relative density ceramics prepared from after 600 °C due nanorods low temperatures, which leads decrease size increase homogeneity. Based on this novel mechanism, ultrafine-grained transparent with good optical mechanical properties fabricated successfully powders.
